HIRE DEDICATED RESOURCES

Project Genesis

Our client, a prominent healthcare innovator, sought to revolutionize the concept of “being healthy” by emphasizing overall well-being. Recognizing the critical connection between mindfulness and physical health, they developed a unique wearable headband device. This headband featured a sensor that sat on the Ear Temple, enabling real-time monitoring of brain activity. We received a request to develop an IoT app for a unique wearable headband. An app that would allow users to set goals, track progress, and interpret brain activity during meditation sessions, while also enhancing motivation and focus.

Device Overview

The multi-sensor headband provides real-time feedback on brain activity, heart rate, breathing, and body movements. Using its mobile app, users can set goals, track progress, and interpret brainwave data to enhance motivation and focus during meditation sessions. Unlike traditional healthcare apps, which primarily focus on fitness and diet tracking, this headband integrates biosensors to capture brainwave activity throughout the day. The accompanying mobile app employs Korean storytelling as a unique data collection mechanism.

Scoping Out the Project

The Wearable Device and App project's aim was to enhance users’ mental well-being by capturing brainwave patterns and promoting relaxation. By leveraging Korean tales and fables, the app creates an engaging and immersive experience for the user while also providing a comprehensive picture of an individual's overall health.

Key Features

1. Focus on Mental Health

  • The device goes beyond physical activity tracking, emphasizing mental well-being.
  • Capturing brainwave patterns provides a holistic view of an individual’s health.
2. Storytelling for Data Collection

  • The app incorporates Korean tales and fables to keep users engaged.
  • As users immerse themselves in stories, the app collects brainwave rhythm data seamlessly.
3. Technical Details

  • The headband connects via Bluetooth to Android and iOS devices.
  • The app combines music, ambient noise, and binaural beats to induce relaxation and focus.
Benefits

  • Users experience a more natural and enjoyable data collection process.
  • Improved mental well-being through brainwave monitoring and relaxation techniques.

Facing Challenges Head on

The challenge lay in creating an intuitive and effective mobile app that seamlessly integrated with the headband. The app needed to empower users to set goals, track their progress, and interpret brain data during meditation sessions.

Developing the Native App - Overcoming Challenges

Technical Integration - Seamlessly linking the headband’s biosensors with a story-based app and TWS earbuds was a significant development effort. Our team dedicated over a year to ensure smooth data transfer and optimal app functionality.

Language Barrier -  Adapting Korean script documents, understanding their musical nuances, and translating them into English required cultural sensitivity. The goal was to design stories for an international audience, even though the app primarily targeted Korean users.

Gamification - Balancing engaging games within the storytelling framework posed challenges. The team aimed to create enjoyable experiences while effectively collecting user data.

Solution - The Method to Madness

We collaborated closely with the client to develop an IoT app tailored to the headband. Our approach included the below

1. Technical Integration

  • TWS (True Wireless Stereo) earbuds were also part of the ecosystem, enhancing the user experience.
  • We meticulously integrated the headband’s biosensors with the app, ensuring seamless data transfer.Data Processing - we calculated the following vitals data using left and right channel brain waves and posterior auricular vein using different electrodes
  1. PPG (Photoplethysmography) - It is a simple optical technique used to detect volumetric changes in blood in peripheral circulation.

  2. EEG (electroencephalogram) - It is a simple test that measures electrical activity in the brain.

  3. HRV (Heart rate variability) - It is the physiological phenomenon of variation in the time interval between heartbeats. It is measured by the variation in the beat-to-beat interval.

  4. BPM (Beats Per Minute) - It is a simple measurement of heart rate per minute.

  5. RR Intervals - Heart Rate, Arterial Blood Pressure, and Their Variability. RR interval, the time elapsed between two successive R-waves of the QRS signal on the electrocardiogram (and its reciprocal, the HR) is a function of intrinsic properties of the sinus node as well as autonomic influences.

  6. SDNN - It is the standard deviation of the IBI intervals measured in ms, NN here means "normal" beats, i.e. removing abnormal or false beats. When assessed over a 24-hour period, SDNN is the clinical "gold standard" in assessing cardiovascular health and in particular, morbidity and risk of cardiac events.
  •  The total length of single PPG data - 23byte/Sec
  •  The total length of single EEG data - 4352byte/Sec
  •  Protocol used - OpenEEG P2 Protocol (P2 uses 17 data bytes to transmit 6 channels of EEG data)

How is this data helpful to us?

Using the above data, we calculated these vital factors of the human body - smCog, smAtt, smMood, smRT, smRA, smRB, smRG, smRFA, smRSA, smRLB, smRMB, smRHB, smACT, smStr, smShortStr, smLongStr, smANS, smSDNN, smCond, smRJFHF.

  1.  Attention Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This scale defines a person's attention to environmental changes at that moment. The higher the index, the higher the attention rate of that person.

  2.  Relaxation Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This scale shows how much their brain is relaxed in a specific situation. The higher the index, the higher the relaxation rate of that person.

  3.  Brain Activity Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This index shows a person's brain electrical activity in a certain situation. The higher the index, the higher brain activity.

  4.  Stress Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This index show the level of stress that a person is feeling in a specific situation. The higher the index, the higher level of stress on a person's brain depending on the surrounding environmental changes.

  5.  Mood Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This index shows a person's current mood depending on the changes in his surroundings. A higher index shows a happier mood and a lower index shows a sad and depressing mood.

  6.  Physical Condition Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This index shows the functional abilities of a human heart in certain environmental situations. A higher index shows a stable heart condition at a specific moment.

  7.  Short Terms Stress Index(Scale Range 0 to 100) - This index shows acute stress, which is a short-term stress that comes and goes quickly. It can be positive or negative. It's the feeling you get when you're riding on a roller coaster. A higher index shows a more stressful situation and a lower index shows a calm relaxed situation.

2.  Cultural Adaptation & User Engagement

  • Initially focused on Korean users, we translated Korean script documents and adapted musical elements for a global audience.
  • Cultural sensitivity played a crucial role in making the app accessible worldwide.
  • We gamified the app within a storytelling framework, striking a balance between enjoyment and effective data collection.
  • Engaging games complemented meditation sessions, maximizing motivation and focus.

3.  Gamification and Global Reach

  • Stories were culturally adapted and translated while preserving their essence.
  • Engaging game mechanics transcended language barriers, making the app universally appealing.

Effective Contingency Measures

  • Streamlined Development Approach - A specialized team was committed to achieving a seamless fusion of the hardware and software elements.
  • Translation with Cultural Insight -
  • The stories were meticulously translated and adapted, ensuring their original spirit was maintained while making them understandable to a worldwide audience.

  • Innovative Game Mechanics -
  • The games were crafted to enhance the storytelling experience, ensuring a user-friendly interface while also meeting the goals for data gathering.

The Takeaway

The application’s flawless compatibility with Android and iOS platforms elevated it from a mere fitness accessory to a symbol of optimism, strength, and unity amid challenging times. Fueled by inventive thinking, teamwork, and relentless commitment, a basic idea was revolutionized into a vital support for health aficionados across the globe, showcasing the indomitable nature of humanity to rise above adversity.
